The first Indian film festival becomes as adult .
Eighteen years have passed since River to River’s debut at the Rondò di Bacco theatre of Palazzo Pitti, in Florence, in 2001.
Though we could not know what the future would have held for us, we put all our efforts, enthusiasm and love for this kind of cinema – little known in the West at the time – into that first edition.
Our event was still in its beginning and many things would have changed through the years; we already had a clear idea of our mission, though – that is to bring Indian cinema to Florence, Italy, and to let audience appreciate the beauty of the lesser famous filmmaking, along with Bollywood’s charm and splendour.
Three directors were the first guests of the Festival:
- Preeti Chandrakant,
- Dev Benegal,
- Biju Viswanath.
2001 was the year of Indian cinema, not just because River to River Florence Indian Film Festival – the very first festival dedicated to this cinematography outside of India – kicked off then. Ashutosh Gowariker won the Audience Award at Locarno festival with “Lagaan”; while Mira Nair was awarded the Golden Lion for her “Monsoon Wedding” at the Venice Film Festival.
The upcoming 18th edition will be a great chance to both recall our exciting journey and – no doubts – celebrate it in authentic Indian style! #Getrivered
